Southern Styled Apple Pie

This is my favorite pie to make {& more importantly eat}. This is super easy and extremely delicious. One of the ladies at my childhood church made this for every gathering, and you better bet it was gone within 15 minutes! We’ve made a few changes to her original recipe, and I think it’s better than ever. If you’re looking for a classic pie recipe to stick to, this one’s for you!

Southern Styled Apple Pie

2 c. flour
2/3 c. Crisco
1/2 tsp. salt

Chill crust in plastic wrap for at least 1 hour.

Cut 6 medium Jonagold apples. Slice. Place in pie plate.

Mix the following ingredients together and place over apples:

2 tsp. cinnamon Southern Styled Apple Pie

Place 2 tablespoons of butter on top of sugar mixture. Place water sprinkles along the rim of the crust. Place top crust on top. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Add extra butter to top of crust. Cut slots in top crust.

When God Tells You to Wait

I think one of the hardest things in life is to be patient. I know God blessed me with many talents and special abilities, but He did not grant me much patience. Different times in my life, it has been a struggle to wait for things, people, and decisions. I know it is struggle for a lot of other people too! So that’s why today, I’m writing about what to do when God tells you to wait.

For me, it’s easy to remember a time when God told me to wait and I didn’t want to. Growing up, I really didn’t seriously date anyone. I just couldn’t find anyone that emotionally complimented me the way a boyfriend, or one day a husband would. Even though I prayed for God to bring me a man and to prepare me to be a great wife, I knew it was never promised to me. I was worried that I would never date or marry. When you’re in high school and all of your classmates are dating other people, you really begin to feel like you messed up somewhere because you’re not getting that experience. I was frustrated, really frustrated, and while the world told me that I need to be less conservative and more “out-there” to find a man, God told me to follow Him and patiently wait. This was extremely difficult. It wasn’t fun going to every school dance alone and wondering what I was doing wrong and why no one wanted me. Then one day, God gave me an answer, my answer, He gave me Hayden. It was crazy for me! After much prayer and patience, my answer came and my life changed.

While that’s a great story to hear, I know some of you are saying, “You’re lucky your prayer got answered the way you wanted!” You’re right; I am very blessed that I received the answer I was praying for in that instance. However, there have been times in my life, when God asked me to wait and things didn’t end up the way I had originally wanted. At the time, I was so frustrated and confused. I didn’t understand what I had done wrong and why I wasn’t receiving the answer I wanted. However, I can say after I’ve received an answer I didn’t want, things have still worked out when I’ve kept my eyes and heart on God. Things might have not worked out the way I originally planned and it might of not been exactly what I wanted, but everything was still great. I can’t explain why God makes us wait for some things. I can’t explain why certain things happen to some people and don’t happen for others. However, I can tell you that when you keep your eyes and your heart focused on God, you will have peace. If there would be anything I would tell my younger self about waiting for a man, it would be to have faith in God. To have faith that God would find me the perfect man or that without a man I would still feel great and wonderful. God is the living water, and while other things and people in life are great, He is the only one you need.

John 4:13-14

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

If you are currently waiting here are some verses for you:

Psalms 27:13-14

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Isaiah 30:18

Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

Lamentations 3:25

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

Proverbs 16:9

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.

Micah 7:7

But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.

Romans 12:12

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Good Reads

Growing up, I always loved reading. I loved sitting down and picking up a good book and becoming engrossed in a story. I thought being alone and reading by myself was a lot of fun. What I didn’t know what that sitting down and reading a good book with your fiancé/spouse is even more fun.

Hayden and I read books together before we were engaged, and I found it to be extremely fun. We could talk about the readings, and it sparked new conversations. I want to encourage couples young and old to pick up a book and try to read together. You don’t have to be a speedy reader or have amazing reading-out-loud skills. You just need to realize that this can be a special moment to discuss what you and your spouse think and feel. If you don’t have any clue what books to read let me offer a few suggestions!

The 5 Love Languages

By: Gary Chapman

5 Love Languages

This book is absolutely amazing, and it is the first book I read with Hayden. It really helped us understand how to love one another. It explains that we give and receive love differently. I would recommend reading this book first if you haven’t. It gives a good base to build off. To find out what you or your fiancé/spouse’s love languages are take the quiz online! It only takes a few minutes!

Our premarital counselors suggested this book for our counseling sessions, and I’m so glad they did! It was very good book to read with Hayden. The book provides a lot of real world examples to help you understand better. I love the questions at the end of the chapter! You can also purchase men’s and women’s workbooks!
